Why Your Business Loses Sales at 11pm (and What a WhatsApp AI Agent Does About It)
In Malaysia — and across most of Southeast Asia — the buying conversation doesn't happen on your website's contact form. It happens on WhatsApp. A customer sees your product, taps the number, and sends something like:
"Hi, do you have the 20L storage box? Need 50 units for my shop"
Here's the uncomfortable part: a large share of those messages arrive at night, on weekends, or while your one salesperson is with another customer. An enquiry that waits until morning is often an enquiry answered by your competitor at 11:05pm.
Why speed beats almost everything
Sales research has said it for years and our clients' lead data agrees: the odds of converting an enquiry collapse as response time grows. On WhatsApp the effect is sharper, because the medium feels instant. A reply within a minute reads as attentive. A reply after nine hours reads as "they don't need my business."
You can't staff your way out of this at SME scale. A 24/7 human roster for a single WhatsApp line is an enterprise budget. This is the one place where an AI agent is not a gimmick — it's the only economical answer to a structural timing problem.
What a good WhatsApp agent actually does
A useful agent is not a chatbot with canned buttons. Built properly — ours, Corpi, runs on Anthropic's Claude — it should:
- Answer in the customer's language, including mixed language. Malaysian WhatsApp is English, Bahasa, Mandarin, and Manglish in the same thread. An agent that forces one language feels foreign.
- Quote from your real catalogue. Prices, bulk tiers, delivery terms — from a knowledge base you control, not hallucinated.
- Qualify through conversation. Budget, quantity, location — gathered naturally, not as a form.
- File every lead. Name, phone, need, and a summary of the conversation, written into your CRM automatically.
- Hand off to a human gracefully. When the customer asks for a person, or the question leaves the knowledge base, the agent says so honestly and escalates with the full thread attached — no dead ends, no invented answers.
That last point is the difference between an agent that protects your brand and one that damages it. An AI that won't say "I don't know" is a liability.
What it shouldn't require
A few things we deliberately built around, because they burn SMEs:
- No Meta Business API subscription required. There's a route onto your existing WhatsApp number that skips the monthly platform fee and the approval queue — you scan a QR code, much like WhatsApp Web.
- No developer needed for updates. Your product knowledge should live somewhere your team already edits (for Corpi, it's a Notion page; changes go live in about half an hour).
- No per-message anxiety. Flat monthly tiers beat per-message billing for a channel whose whole point is to be used freely.
The honest limitations
An agent will not close complex B2B deals alone, negotiate bespoke contracts, or replace the trust a good salesperson builds. What it does is keep the top of your funnel from leaking while humans sleep: it answers in seconds, qualifies, books the follow-up, and hands your team a warm lead with context instead of a cold missed call.
For most SMEs the math is simple. One recovered evening enquiry a week typically pays the subscription several times over.
If you want to see it rather than read about it, the Corpi page has a replay of a real conversation — including the customer switching to Bahasa mid-thread — and pricing is public: from RM 1,500 setup and RM 300 a month. Or just WhatsApp us. Fittingly, the agent will answer.
